"Girls Home"
When Disciple Makers first began working in Honduras (1990), there was a home in San Pedro Sula that was dedicated to helping young girls from the Merendon mountains.  After completing a 6th grade education, girls from the mountains would have to come down into the city of San Pedro to continue their education.  However, this was not viable for most of the poverty stricken families living in the mountains.  The mindset is such that young ladies will one day get married, have children, etc. and no longer use their education to pursue a carrer outside of the home.  Thus, continued education beyond 6th grade is a "waste" in the eyes of most parents.  Veteran missionaries, John & Madonna Spratt, were the ones who began this ministry for these young ladies.  Throughout the years, dozens of young ladies have gone on to pursue their educations and have graduated into professional careers such as nurses and teachers.  In recent years, the church in San Pedro Sula  has taken on this area of ministry to the young ladies from the Merendon mountains.
Actually, the "girl's house" (as it is commonly referred to) has a long history with the ministry of Disciple Makers.  In 1991, we began to hold church services on the front porch of the home.  The nucleus that was formed from that group soon became the church in San Pedro Sula.  Recently, there have been some changes that now allows the young ladies to live with families within the city of San Pedro Sula.  Since the young ladies are no longer using the house, it has been converted into a teacher's home for some of our teachers in San Pedro Sula.  However, the "Girl's Home" ministry continues as young women from the mountains continue to move into the city to pursue their continued education.  These young ladies not only are part of the church in San Pedro, but they are also cared for by the church.
